How to help prevent a water damage

10/22/2018 (Permalink)

Water Damage How to help prevent a water damage Water damage in laundry room example

Water damage is the No. 1 culprit that weakens your home’s foundation and the very core that holds your house together. You’ve heard about core strength for your body. Well, water damage hits at the core strength of your house, eventually causing serious structural damage. Damp wood invites termites and carpenter ants; plus, it causes mold and mildew. Here’s how to prevent water damage using three easy strategies that will give you peace of mind the next time heavy storms hit.

Ensure good drainage- Why it matters: Poor drainage weakens your foundation, causing cracks, uneven settling, and pathways for water to enter your home.

Test your sump pump regularly- Sump pumps come to life during storms. That’s not when you want to realize yours isn’t working properly. You should check it at least once a year, and ideally perform several checks during heavy storm seasons.

Check for water leaks and call SERVPRO of Upland/San Antonio Heights to fix them.

Persistent leaks lead to mold and mildew rot, and even termite and carpenter ants (they like chewing soggy wood, since it’s soft). Yet if you fix a leak soon after it starts, there may be no long-term damage at all.?

Mold spreads fast

9/27/2018 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Mold spreads fast Mold in a home.

Any home or business can quickly become infested with mold with the introduction of a water source, like a roof or plumbing leak. Mold can spread throughout a property in as little as 48-72 hours, and can produce allergens and irritants that have the potential to cause other health effects.

If you suspect that your home or business has a mold problem, SERVPRO of Upland/San Antonio Heights can inspect and assess your property. If mold is found, we have the training, equipment, and expertise to handle the situation.

Microscopic mold spores exist almost everywhere, outdoors and indoors, making it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or on a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

Top 5 causes of commercial water damage

Commercial Top 5 causes of commercial water damage Commercial water damage in clothing store.

Flooding can happen very quickly. What starts out as a small storm can suddenly turn into something larger, and cause a lot more damage than anyone expected. If your commercial property isn’t in pristine condition, there is a chance that water damage will occur. For example, a small leak on the roof can turn into a large downpour of water that floods an entire section of the property.

Damaged appliances. Pretty much every office building has a kitchen or a break room. And typically these rooms have a refrigerator and possibly a dishwasher. When these appliances fail, they can leak a significant amount of water, flooding the entire room or more.

Backed up sewer lines. Bathrooms are another source of possible problems. It is not uncommon for the sewer lines to get backed up, releasing contaminated water into the building. This type of water damage is extremely dangerous because the water is filled with hazardous waste and other contaminants.

Malfunctioning sprinklers. By law, all commercial properties must be equipped with an overhead sprinkler system. This system works in conjunction with the fire alarm, and is typically activated when the fire alarm goes off. This can cause water damage in two ways. First, as we mentioned in a previous blog post, any time there is a fire and the sprinklers activate, there will be water damage. And second, the sprinkler system can malfunction and activate on its own. When this happens, significant water damage can occur because of the fact that the sprinkler system covers the entire building.

Broken pipes. Broken or cracked pipes are very common in commercial buildings, especially as they age. When these pipes burst open, water rushes out of them, spraying throughout the building. This can cause damage to the ceiling, walls, and flooring, not to mention any furniture or electronics that get in the water’s way.

When we arrive to a commercial water damage

8/29/2018 (Permalink)

Commercial When we arrive to a commercial water damage Water damage in a commercial property.

Obviously you want to keep an eye on the list above. Ongoing maintenance to your commercial property is key to not having water related issues. But if water damage does happen anywhere on your property, you need to take immediate action. After calling your insurance provider, you need to contact a reliable water damage restoration company, like us. And once we are on the job, we get right to work by doing the following:

First we will thoroughly inspect the property. We will find out what caused the damage and make sure that the water has stopped flowing. We will also determine if the water is contaminated or not. During this stage we remove all furniture that has been affected, while trying to salvage as much as possible.
Next we begin the water extraction process. We use pumps and other vacuums to remove all water from the property.

Once all the water is removed, we start the drying process. If everything is not dried properly, problems occur that result in longer recovery and escalating restoration costs. We set up and monitor the drying process through every phase to ensure that proper drying occurs. We will document moisture levels, provide moisture maps, and photograph drying for the insurance provider. When the property has been thoroughly dried, we start the sanitation process. We have to make sure everything is cleaned and sanitized because of the mold and other contaminates that form due to standing water. Water damage isn’t something that you want to happen on your commercial property. But when it does, you want to hire the right company to clean up the damage and get your business back to normal as quickly as possible. Call us today to put a disaster response plan in place.

  3. Immediately contact your insurance company.

  4. After the “all-clear,” remove necessary items.
These include business licenses and permits, inventory and accounting records, employee documents, insurance information, cash, credit cards, and checkbooks, and other valuables. NOTE: Do not open fire safes until they have cooled as contents may ignite or the safe explode!
  5. Notify local law enforcement – and everyone else.
Alerting local law enforcement can help prevent further vandalism, theft, and liability issues. Fire Damage What to do after a fire damage House on fire

Experiencing a house fire is a scary situation. After the feeling of unbelief, people are wondering what they can do to start the cleanup process from the damage. It’s important to take the necessary steps to ensure you and your family are safe.

Get Permission Before Entering Your Property

Depending on how extensive the fire damage is, make sure the Fire Marshall tells you that the structure is safe to enter. There are possible dangers in your home such as hot spots and unsupported beams that could cause harm.  You also want to be careful no one in the household uses the electricity without permission from the authorities. Although you are anxious to find out if your favorite things survived the fire, waiting until it is safe prevents you from dealing with an injury that could delay cleaning up the fire damage.

Document the Damage

It is also a good idea to take pictures that can be used for insurance purposes and to give potential companies an idea of the damage when you are seeking quotes. It’s important to note that some damage may not be visible, such as getting that smoke smell out of clothes and furniture. Remember, it’s important to keep in mind that fire creates two types of smoke damage; visible soot and an invisible odor.

Call A Professional Fire Damage Restoration Company

Although there are some things you can do on your own, such as removing items like clothing and linens that can be washed or taken to the dry cleaners. But, you should not attempt to handle items that have severe damage from the fire, smoke or water. Contacting a restoration company is the best way to handle fire damages. These companies specialize in restoring and repairing what has been damaged.

Checklist after a Storm Damage

Storm Damage Checklist after a Storm Damage Storm damage on residential or business properties

Whether it is wind, rain, hail or lightening, it’s important to do a quick inspection around your property after a storm to check for any damages that might require repairs – or even an insurance claim.

After the storm has cleared and it is safe to go outside, you should check the following things around your property:

Exterior

  • Missing, damaged or broken roof shingles
  • Siding damage
  • Cracks, tears or buckling in the flashing
  • Chimney damage – tilting, loose or damaged bricks, missing or torn flashing
  • Gutters with debris and clogging, granules in downspouts, dents, bent or sagging sections, loose attachments
  • Shattered windows, broken panes or damaged frame
  • Downed or damaged powerlines – make sure that you stay away from any downed lines, and call the local utility company to report the location

Interior

  • Check the attic and interiors for damp sections, moisture stains or peeling paint on the walls or ceiling
  • Look in the basement and crawl space for flooding or structural damage
  • Inspect electronics and appliances after power surges – washer, dryer, dishwasher, electric fireplace, refrigerator, TV, computer, etc.
  • Downed or damaged powerlines – make sure that you stay away from any downed lines, and call the local utility company to report the location

Commercial damages

Commercial Commercial damages Commercial water damage.

When business owners visualize water damage, they often picture a massive storm wiping out power lines, flooding offices, and shutting down businesses for days at a time. It is true that commercial water damage is often the result of floods and water that stems from weather events and storms. However, many entrepreneurs and business space renters forget that storms and severe weather aren't the only causes of floods and water damage. Here are some of the typical causes of water damage to commercial buildings.

1. Malfunctioning sprinkler systems
Some older office and retail buildings still have outdated sprinkler systems that work in conjunction with fire protection systems. While such sprinklers can come in handy during a fire emergency, they can also cause commercial flood damage if they are faulty or in need of replacement. This could easily damage inventory and business assets.

2. Damaged appliances and equipment This cause of commercial flood damage is more common in restaurants and catering facilities, as well as any business that has appliances and equipment that make use of water. If the appliance fails and sends water across your building, especially during late hours when no one is around, you may come back to work and face a water emergency.

3. Broken pipes and plumbing
Just like in a residence, if the plumbing system in your workplace fails water damage could be the result.

4. Backed up sewer lines
This is another cause of commercial water damage that often catches business owners by surprise. Should the sewer line to your building back up or become damaged, realize the potential dangers of contaminated Black Water which can cause health effects and ruin products and office furnishings.

Even small water damages have the potential to cause serious structural and indoor air quality issues over time. The key to avoiding costly future restoration is to handle every water problem as a real threat to your property. The two primary components of a proper water restoration are: 1 Fast action; and 2 thorough drying. Intrusions of water into your home or place of business can result in mold growth. Water intrusions can result from storm damage, plumbing, long-standing leaks and poor humidity control. Organic materials found inside a building, such as wood, paper, drywall and insulation, provide food sources for mold to flourish. Excessive mold growth can lead to indoor environmental conditions that pose a health threat. You can always trust SERVPRO of Upland/San Antonio Heights to manage all of your water damage needs.

Learn how to protect yourself and your finances from additional loss. FEMA offers reminders to help you avoid disaster fraud, including:

  • There is never a fee to apply for FEMA disaster assistance or to receive it;
  • Get three written estimates for repair work. Then check credentials and contact your local Better Business Bureau or Chamber of Commerce to learn about any complaints against the contractor or business;
  • Before work begins, make sure you get a written contract detailing all the work to be performed, the costs, a projected completion date, and how to negotiate changes and settle disputes; and
  • Pay only by check or a credit card. A reasonable down payment may be required to buy materials for some projects, but don't pay anything without a signed contract.

Water Damage to Fabrics

8/9/2017 (Permalink)

Water Damage Water Damage to Fabrics Water Damaged Sofa? Let Us Help You.

SERVPRO Can Salvage Fabrics from Water Damage

Some of the most at-risk objects and materials in a home come in the form of fabrics. Fabric and textiles make up our furniture, our flooring, drapes, our belongings, and sometimes even our walls and appliances, and all of these are highly susceptible to water damage. Thankfully, most types of water damage to fabrics are restorable and treatable in the hands of trained professionals. Depending on the type of fabric and its use, we vary our approach considerably when taking on a job for water damage restoration to fabrics.

Issues in General
Common throughout most types of fabric taking on water damage in California are a few constant problems. For homeowners, the most troubling are often staining and discoloration, which can permanently ruin the appearance of some types of fabric if not treated correctly. Depending on the kind of water damage and fabric, our technicians may be able to remove this staining without replacing anything.

Carpeting
When it absorbs water, carpeting and padding can become heavily warped and misshapen. If not treated quickly, this may lead to a complete replacing of the material. Furthermore, carpeting is often harmed through flooding, which means that the general fabric damages are often most dangerous and prominent here. However, if only a portion of the carpet is too far gone, it can typically be removed and replaced if a successful drying out of the remaining carpet and pad has been accomplished.

Drapes and Window Coverings
Drapes and window treatments can also sustain water damage through flooding, but are also a common casualty after storm damage. If the damage is significant, it can be difficult to fully restore large and heavy drapes, although damage is often light enough to allow for full restoration.

Furniture
Fabric furniture pieces can sustain all of the usual problems, but are also highly susceptible to color bleed. Following a flood or significant water wicking into a piece of furniture, we recommend removing all pillows, sheets, and cushions from the furniture, if possible. This may help to mitigate damage to the non-fabric portions of the furniture.

Clothing
Most articles of clothing can survive light to moderate water damage with a thorough dry cleaning. For heavier damage or flooding, however, it is typically best to replace most items, as they may present a hazard or be too costly to restore.

Let Us Handle The Eye Of The Storm Carpet Cleaning

Storm Damage Let Us Handle The Eye Of The Storm Carpet Cleaning Regular Carpet Cleaning Can Extend the Life of Your Carpet

SERVPRO Can Get the Deep Dirt Out of Your Carpet

Carpet cleaning is like the unexpected storm that damages your home or business. It is suggested by carpeting manufacturers that carpets should be professionally cleaned every 12 months. During the interim, carpets should be cared for with regular maintenance solutions. These steps involve using walk-off mats to lessen the amount of soil tracked onto the carpet; regular vacuuming; removing spots, pilating (or grooming) the carpet to prevent matting and moving furniture to change traffic patterns. As beautiful and aesthetic as carpeting is, it is a natural dirt and soil filter trap. It traps and holds dust, crumbs, dirt, gasses, pet hair, and other soil contaminants.

Our  carpet cleaning service is designed to keep your indoor air a healthy breathing environment. When you look at your carpeting, you may only see the dirt trapped on the top fibers. The truth is that more dirt, bacteria, and germs are hiding below the surface. The hidden contaminants are causing damage to the life of your carpeting. We offer specialized cleaning methods based on your carpeting material. We provide a premier cleaning system, which also involves bonnet cleaning, hot water extraction, deluxe preconditioning and rinse, as well as a quality dry cleaning.

Let us take the drudgery of carpet cleaning out of your hands. Place this necessary chore into the hands of your local professionals. We offer regular carpet cleaning services that will keep your carpet looking new. Protect your flooring investment by having SERVPRO clean and maintain your carpets. We use safe state-of-the-art equipment and solutions. Our certified and experienced technicians will get the job done right the first time and every time.

Grilling Safety Tips to Prevent Fires

8/1/2017 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Grilling Safety Tips to Prevent Fires On Average, 8,900 home fires are started by grilling each year.

When the warmer weather hits, there is nothing better than the smell of food on the grill.  According to the NFPA  three out of five households own a gas grill, which means there’s an increased risk of fires in homes.

Each year an average of 8,900 of home fires are caused by grilling, and close to half of all the injuries involving grills are due to thermal burns.

Even though nearly half the people who grill do it year round, most of the injuries happen in the month of July, followed by May, June and August.

Safety Tips

  • Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.
  • Be sure to place your grill well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
  • Keep children and pets away from the grill area.
  • Never leave your grill unattended.
  • Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in the trays below the grill.

Outdoor Fire Pit Safety

7/31/2017 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Outdoor Fire Pit Safety Fire Pit Safety

Fire pits are a great way to accessorize your yard and they are perfect for gatherings! When you use your fire pit, make sure you are keeping you and your property safe by following these safety tips!

Location

Make sure you keep your fire pit AT LEAST 10 feet away from any structures. This may help prevent sparks from hitting your home and excessive smoke from entering your or your neighbor’s home.

Do NOT put your fire pit under tree branches or on a covered deck. Make sure your fire pit is in a location where the flames and sparks will not hit any objects.

Under the Pit

If your fire pit is not built into the ground, make sure you have stone, brick, gravel, or concrete under the pit. This will help prevent the area below the pit from burning. You should NEVER place your pit over dry grass or over a wooden deck. This is because the heat from the base of it pit may spark a fire to the ground below it.

Weather

Do not use your fire pit if it is windy. The wind may push sparks from the fire to an area that is flammable.

When you are using your fire pit, you should notice the direction the breeze is blowing. You should move any object out of the way of where the breeze is blowing to help prevent a fire from occurring.

Lighting the Pit

When lighting your fire pit, use a commercial fire starter pack. Do NOT use lighter fluid or gasoline to light the pit or to relight fires. You should always keep water nearby just in case the fire inside of the pit spreads.

Before you use your fire pit, you should check your town’s laws on fire pits. Some towns require a permit and an inspection. If the unfortunate happens, call the experts at SERVPRO. We will restore your property and make it look “Like it never even happened.”

Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Property

7/18/2017 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Property This kitchen fire left behind a lot of smoke and soot damage.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and Soot Facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Upland and San Antonio Heights will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

A record-setting group of more than 2800 franchise owners, key staff and corporate representatives attended the convention, which was held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas from June 26-30.

“While building a successful small business takes work and dedication, our success is also a reflection of the support and exceptional disaster remediation solutions and training we receive as a member of the SERVPRO franchise network,” said Abbey Khoury, SERVPRO of Upland and San Antonio Heights owner. “We are proud to accept this award on behalf of our business and our employees, and are grateful to SERVPRO for giving us the tools, framework and training we need to be both successful and a resource to our community when disaster strikes.”

Upland, CA (Grassroots Newswire) June 1, 2016 -- The American Red Cross recently recognized SERVPRO®, a cleanup and restoration company, for participation in its Disaster Responder Program1.  As a Disaster Responder Program member, SERVPRO pledges a donation to the Red Cross in advance of disasters, allowing the organization to respond quickly and effectively to nearly 66,000 disasters annually, most of which are home fires. SERVPRO is entering their third year of partnership with the Red Cross; their donations to the organization to date exceed one million dollars.

According to statistics cited by the Red Cross, seven people die in a home fire each day in the U.S. Aiming to reduce deaths and injuries caused by home fires by 25 percent by the end of 2019, the Red Cross launched a Home Fire Campaign in October of 2014. The support of SERVPRO and other Disaster Responder Program members allows the Red Cross to pursue their home fire prevention goals while they continue to provide critical services to disaster victims.

“One of the reasons home fires account for the majority of the disasters the Red Cross responds to annually is that the risk for home fires exists all year long,” said Abbey Khoury, owner of SERVPRO of Upland and San Antonio Heights. “Statistics compiled by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)2 show the majority of home fires are related to unattended cooking accidents – and cooking is something most people do every day.”

Although SERVPRO’s business is helping business and home owners recover from fire, flood and other disasters, the company and its franchisees actively support disaster preparedness education, including fire prevention efforts. When disaster does strike, their relationships with major insurance companies combined with industry-leading job-management technology help smooth the path to rebuilding and restoration for home and business owners affected by the unexpected.

“SERVPRO’s commitment to the Red Cross Disaster Responder Program means that, when disaster strikes, homeowners can count on the Red Cross to address their immediate needs and supply essential services,” said Khoury. “Once the immediate emergency is under control, homeowners can count on the expertise of restoration specialists at SERVPRO of Upland and San Antonio Heights to help them restore their property and move forward with their lives.”
